Bands: Yellowcard, Youngblood, The Assembly Line
Location: 9:30 Club, Washington, DC
When I was finishing high school and for most of college I was big into pop punk and for want of a better term emo music. One band that I listened to a lot was Yellowcard, and every once in a while, partially because it's nostalgic, and partially because I still genuinely like some of their music, I love the album Ocean Avenue, and I think that Southern Air is a pretty good album with a few great songs.
1. Awakening
2. Surface of the Sun
3. Way Away
4. Breathing
5. Rivertown Blues
6. Rough Landing, Holly
7. Light up the Sky
8. Five Becomes Four
9. Hang You Up
10. Here I am Alive
11. With You Around
12. Lights and Sounds
13. Only One
14. Southern Air
Encore:
15. Sing for Me
16. Believe
17. Ocean Avenue
The opening two bands were passable but not memorable, so I really don't have much to say about them.
Yellowcard opened their show with Awakening which was a great choice as it set the tone for the whole show. The song opens a bit quiet and with basically just the lead singer on guitar and him singing almost flat in tone with emotion that builds slowly before it drops they, and in our case if I remember well just the crowd, shout "Awakening" and the sound drops just for half a second before the whole band turns in and they start jumping which was matched by the crowd who was immediately pulled into the show.
The next few songs kept the tempo up they had set especially with bringing in the two opening songs from their wildly loved Ocean Avenue which kept the crowd going. I didn't recognize a few of the songs in the middle because they were not from album I was familiar with but even with that I was still into the show. They closed the first part of their show with a song from the most recent album which gave us a high note while waiting for the expected encore.
The opening song for the encore was ok but didn't really grab me. I think it was at this point but it might have been earlier when the lead singer hinted at that they would be doing another tour for something which I can only assume is a 10th Anniversary tour of Ocean Avenue. The second to last song is my favorite Yellowcard song and one of my favorite songs, it's Yellowcard's tribute to the rescue workers of 9/11 and the singer sings of his thank you's to them along with how he realizes his luck in having his family, and it's a fast paced and uplifting song and a great song to play close to the end. They closed the show with their most well known song, which although predictable was a lot of fun. Needless to say I enjoyed every minute of the show and intend to be there if they do the 10th anniversary tour.
